Taking a rideshare back to New York City, I met Famous. Famous moved to New York City’s Lower East Side in the early ’90s and built a home, literally. The Lower East Side was a drastically different place two decades ago. It was riddled with poverty and homelessness, with people camping anywhere they found the space. Famous was one of a few hundred people who reclaimed and revived the urban landscape of the neighborhood. She was a squatter. She not only gave birth to her daughter in the squats, but she raised her there too. For more information about NYC’s anti-gentrification movements check out the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space.
